Miniature portraits - Sheila Gorman

I saw the exhibition in the National Gallery of Ireland in 2010 of miniature portraits painted by various Irish and English artists. They are tiny, perhaps only 1.5 inches, in diameter. I wondered how they were made. What kind of brushes were used? I almost bought Paul Caffrey’s book ‘Treasures to Hold, Irish and English Miniatures’ and now wish I had. I plan to undertake more research.
